Founded last October under the umbrella of St Patrick’s Brass Band, the Galway Concert Band brings together local musicians with a shared passion for wind band and concert repertoire.
Unlike marching bands, concert bands play seated, and tend to focus on musical nuance, playing a repertoire that includes original wind instrument compositions, along with orchestral transcriptions and popular music.
This debut concert represents an important milestone for Galway’s cultural life, expanding the city’s vibrant music scene, and creating a new platform for ensemble performance. The Galway Concert Band aims to become a lasting part of the local arts community, welcoming audiences of all ages and musical backgrounds.
The programme promises a lively and varied evening, featuring music from across styles and generations. Audiences can expect highlights such as Verdi’s dramatic Dies Irae, the Schubert Serenade, powerful excerpts from Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana, and popular film and stage selections, including music from The Incredibles and other cinematic classics.
The band will also explore jazz and popular music with medleys from Duke Ellington, Queen and more.
The concert begins at 7pm, with doors opening at 6.30pm.
