Galway is known for the arts and, as such, provides many opportunities across the county for the youth to get involved in performing arts. Phoenix Stage School is the perfect place to get onto the stage while learning valuable life lessons, performance and dance. It’s more than just a stage school, though; it’s a second home.
The classmates feel like family and support each other as if they are one. Phoenix offers a wide variety of classes, from musical theatre to technique, singing lessons to drama. There is something for everyone.
Each class involves warm-ups, floor work, new choreography and fun. I remember being a hyperactive six-year-old put into the musical theatre class because all my older sisters were dancing there. It was the best decision I ever made because now, I’m confident, I have a passion for theatre and friends for life.
Alongside theatre, I joined the technique class in my first year, aged 12. I remember my first day so vividly, purely because I begged my mom not to make me go but, like all mothers do, I walked into the class, absolutely terrified, but now I wouldn’t change it for the world.
Dance has taught me so much, aside from just new tricks or choreography that makes my head spin. It’s taught me how to step outside my comfort zone, to take that plunge.
It’s shown me how to bounce back after a loss. It’s taught me how to use my voice and express myself. Most importantly, it’s helped me grow into the person I am today.
It’s led me to so many experiences, the good ones, the bad ones, and the ones that will not be brought up again, that have shaped me and helped me bond with my team.
From competitions to musicals to showcases, I will never be able to express how much dance changed my life. I feel like I’m constantly challenged, too. Every week, there’s a new choreography to learn or a new song or even a drama piece.
The standard keeps rising as the years go by, and it’s something I adore because there’s always a new best to reach. It could be learning how to do a triple pirouette or complicated riffs, but it’s building towards being the best version of myself.
Phoenix Stage School is so much more than a place where kids learn to dance. It’s an escape from the burdens of life, it’s a way to express yourself, to grow and learn. It’s a home. Somewhere that most days a week, I forget about life for a while and just lose myself in the music.
I know once I grow up and leave, the lessons I have learned here will never be forgotten, even if I never step onto a stage again in my life.
Phoenix and dance will always have a place in my heart. So, if you have a child who wants to join a sport, I hope that they join Phoenix Stage School.
