Human Nature
By Tadhg Melia
Everyone lives and everyone dies
This is the truth, which we cannot deny
We say that time flies, we complain and give out
But in the end, we are the ones running about
From winter to summer, from autumn to spring
We run round in circles and race round in rings
Through wet Monday mornings to afternoon teas
Though time doesn’t stop truth be told nor do we
We just talk and we think, and we talk, and we think
About new neighbour Pat and the old broken sink
And that trip coming soon and next week’s big parade
And that 1st Class school tour that still needs to be paid
And that sporting event and that Friday night out
And the grass being cut and the new roundabout
And the sink once again and this week’s weekly shop
And this morning’s bake sale but we DON’T THINK TO STOP!
To stop for a second, to stop and not think
To breathe in and breathe out and let your eyelids sink
And not think
To not think about deadlines, to stop and have ease
To not think about emails and RSVPS
And to stop
Tomorrow will happen, the day after will too
Everything will work out if you listen to you
And say ‘what do I need so I can rise to the top?’
And what you need is a break,
What you need is to stop

Each footstep can start a new path,
A shift in the wind can change a river’s course,
The moons journey alters the tide-
Nature will remember.
A single snicker can change their day,
One comment might stick to their soul,
A snide joke they will never laugh at-
People will remember.
