Calasanctius College Leaving Certificate student Conor Penney has enjoyed an outstanding run of success in athletics, establishing himself as one of Galway’s leading young sports stars.
Conor’s achievements were recognised in 2026 when he received a Connacht Tribune Athletics Sports Star of the Year Award. He also competed internationally, finishing second in the Top Hauteur high jump competition in Nantes, France, where he cleared a personal best height of 2.11 metres.
The Oranmore athlete’s 2025 season was particularly impressive. He claimed the national senior high jump title and finished third in the national senior 110m hurdles, while also placing sixth at the European Youth Olympic Festival (EYOF ). At underage level, Conor captured national U20 outdoor gold in the high jump, the national U18 outdoor title in the 110m hurdles, and the national U18 indoor high jump championship. Representing Calasanctius College, he also won the All-Ireland Schools Intermediate National High Jump title, and finished second at the prestigious Cork City Sports.
In addition, Conor was honoured with Athletics Ireland’s Juvenile Star Award for Galway, recognising his exceptional contribution to the sport at county level.
Conor’s success has brought great pride to his family, his school and the wider Oranmore community, with many now watching closely as his athletics career continues to soar.
