Pianos in pubs for Patrick’s Day

Ivories will be tickled in Connemara this spring, with Clifden set to host Ireland’s first ever piano festival.

Organisers are attempting to place a real piano in every pub around the County Galway town, and have invited 40 pianists to play shows over the two days leading up to St Patrick’s Day this year.

Two shows per day are planned in each pub: all day on Sunday, March 15, and from 7pm on Monday, March 16. St Patrick’s Day itself falls on Tuesday, March 17, this year, which will be a public holiday.

A stellar line-up is anticipated for the capital of Connemara, with Phil Coulter, Paul Harrington, Michael English and many more keyboardists already confirmed.

These shows will all be free events, and organisers say all sessions in each venue will be “small, cosy and full to the brim with atmosphere”.

So far, the Abbeyglen Hotel, Ravi’s Bar & Restaurant, Mullarkeys, EJ Kings, Guys, McGrath’s, Vaughan’s, The Woodfield, Lowry’s, The Station House, and The Alcock & Brown have made space for key pounders. Expect Irish Coffees, and other “black and white” drinks to abound, as a homage to the 88 keys.

On Tuesday, March 17, the St Patrick’s Day parade in Clifden will begin at 12.30pm from The Square.
