Galway city walks go bilingual

President Catherine Connolly will attend the launch of a new bilingual book of Galway city walks next week.

Siúlóidí Dúlra Ghaillimh S’Againne / Our Galway Nature Walks is co-authored by Joe McGinley and Patrick McGinley. An official launch will be held at 2pm on Thursday, January 22, at the Galway Hospice.

The book describes and guides readers through five walks within Galway city, including bus routes to get to them.

All the content is presented in English and in Irish, with descriptive photos throughout. Proceeds from book sales will be donated to the Galway Hospice.

“Following the great success of Our Galway City Heritage Walks we decided to write about some more Galway walks, this time with a gentle eye on nature [as] a celebration of Galway’s wonderful biodiversity,” says Patrick. “We met President Catherine Connolly – then a TD. She liked the idea, and suggested publishing it as ‘a bilingual book for our bilingual city,’ so we have.”

The book’s innovative format is designed to be useful to Irish speakers and especially to anyone interested in improving their Gaeilge. All five walks are lesser-known trails within Galway city.

The book is especially valuable for residents and visitors to Galway who love walking and being inspired by nature around us. Patrick reckons all readers are certain to discover something new in the book.

Siúlóidí Dúlra Ghaillimh S’Againne is the eighth book in the series on walks in the West of Ireland. The books are fully illustrated with photographs, and sell for €15 in support of the Galway Hospice.
