For years, Elizabeth McGrath felt frustrated by her inability to maintain a healthy weight. She often felt uncomfortable, lacking in energy and not at her best. Living with ongoing lower back problems — which eventually resulted in spinal fusion surgery after years of pain and medication — became a powerful wake-up call. Elizabeth knew she needed to improve her health, yet feared that doing so would mean giving up the foods she loved and feeling constantly hungry.
Her perspective changed when she decided to attend a local Slimming World group, having heard about the plan through her sister. Although initially hesitant, Elizabeth quickly discovered that Slimming World’s Food Optimising approach was not about restriction, but balance. She learned how to enjoy generous portions of everyday foods, alongside healthy choices such as calcium rich milk and cheese, fibre rich foods and healthy fats such as avocado, thus allowing her the flexibility to enjoy her odd glass of wine or chocolate which she accounted for within her daily allowance.
Meals such as veggie-packed omelettes, jacket potatoes with salad and a traditional Sunday roast soon became staples, proving that healthy eating could be satisfying and family-friendly. With no need to prepare separate meals, healthy living became part of everyday life.
Supported by weekly group meetings and a growing belief in herself, Elizabeth lost weight steadily and sustainably. As her confidence grew, so did her activity levels, with simple changes like walking more and choosing the stairs making a real difference.
Now healthier, happier and full of confidence, Elizabeth McGrath has trained as a Slimming World consultant. Having experienced the plan’s life-changing benefits first-hand, she is passionate about supporting others on their own journeys and helping them believe that lasting change is truly possible.
Elizabeth McGrath is relaunching the Slimming World group in the Clybaun Hotel in Knocknacarra on Wednesday, January 28, with groups meeting at 5.30pm and 7pm.
