A competition for a ‘golden ticket’ of free entries to one of the west of Ireland’s premier entertainment venues has been won in a nail-biting finish.
Last week brought a lovely moment of excitement, community spirit and a little bit of radio magic, as Freda Gray from Shrule was announced as the winner of the Golden Ticket for the TF Royal Hotel and Theatre on Midwest Radio’s Late Late Lunchbox with Padraic Walsh.
Freda earned her place in the draw through the much-loved Beat the Alphabet Quiz, a fast-moving, 40-second general knowledge challenge that Padraic runs twice daily. The quiz has become a real highlight for listeners: quick-fire, high-energy and just tough enough to keep everyone on their toes. Each contestant races against the clock to answer as many alphabet-based general knowledge questions as possible, with scores carefully tracked throughout the week.
At the end of each week, the top scorer walks away with the overall prize - or at least that’s usually the case. Last Friday, Midwest Radio found themselves in the unusual (and exciting ) position of having three contestants tied on the exact same top score. With no separating them on points, the only fair solution was to put all three names into a draw and let fate decide.
That’s where a little extra drama came in. One piece of paper had to be picked at random from the draw. In a moment that had everyone holding their breath, Freda Gray’s name was pulled, officially crowning her the Golden Ticket winner.
