An art exhibition called ‘Magic and Dragons’ will be central to a week-long, Polish-themed Christmas market in Doughiska, from this Sunday, December 14

Dom Polski – the ‘Polish House’ above the Polonez shop on Doughiska Road – will host an opening event for a display of fine art paintings by artist Beata Anna Fijalkowska, at 2pm this Sunday, running until Monday, December 22.

There will also be a Christmas market and dance party until 10pm, with hand-made bangles and jewellery, samples of food and drink to try, and a mini zoo for children with a pet exhibition also on Sunday.

Fijalkowska is a Polish artist, living in Galway, who paints in oil and acrylic, and photographs nature.

She has been exhibiting in Ireland since 2006, including in the Hunt Museum in Limerick. The Poznan-trained artist is a member of the Association of Polish Artists and Designers (ZPAP ).

Inspired by the works of Joan Miró and Paul Klee, Fijalkowska’s colourful paintings are full of childlike joy and hidden symbols. Influenced by surrealism, her paintings are invoked by subconsciousness, with vibrant colours as an antidote for cold winter.

Her art is influenced by Wassily Kandinsky’s Abstract Expressionism, and her love of dragons and other magical creatures.
