Pelvic Health West is expanding its services to support breastfeeding mothers experiencing challenges such as engorgement, blocked ducts, and mastitis. Orlaith Kilgannon, Specialist Physiotherapist in Pelvic Health, is delighted to introduce these new therapeutic services designed to ease discomfort and help mothers continue their breastfeeding journey with confidence.
What can physiotherapy help with?
Engorgement occurs when the breasts become overfilled and congested, often within the first two weeks after birth due to overstimulation. This can cause the breasts to feel hard, swollen, and painful.
Blocked ducts result when milk flow slows due to narrowing or obstruction within the milk ducts. This typically presents as a tender lump and localised discomfort.
Mastitis involves inflammation of the breast tissue, often presenting as a hard, painful lump accompanied by redness, swelling, or warmth in the affected area. It may also be associated with feeding difficulties or fussiness in the baby.
In some cases, mastitis can lead to infection and progress rapidly. Mothers who develop a fever or feel generally unwell should seek medical attention immediately. Physiotherapy can safely complement medical treatment in these situations.
How can physiotherapy help?
Therapeutic ultrasound treatment can relieve symptoms by improving tissue mobility, reducing swelling and pain, and promoting fluid circulation. This gentle, pain-free, and relaxing therapy does not affect breastfeeding and typically produces results within three sessions.
To enhance and maintain recovery, Orlaith combines ultrasound with K-taping techniques and self-massage instruction, ensuring mothers are supported both in the clinic and at home.
Working in close collaboration with your lactation consultant, she aims to provide a complete and effective resolution to breast-related discomfort.
