Within a year, the Mayoman was dead, and his body lost until 1960.

Now historical entertainer Paddy Cullivan brings you the incredible story of The Year of the French – And the murder of John Moore in Galway’s Town Hall Theatre on Tuesday, October 7, at 8pm.

Led by the charismatic General Humbert, these French soldiers and United Irishmen defeated the British at Castlebar, created a new republic, and installed John Moore at its head.

This audio-visual spectacular features hundreds of images, music, and shocking new research as Cullivan recounts the progression of this force of United Irishmen, stiffened by crack French troops under brave General Humbert, as it vanquished the British in Mayo, but was surrounded at Ballinamuck, Co Longford.

In the aftermath, Humbert led a colourful life, and later exacted his revenge on the British halfway across the world, but John Moore was less fortunate. Moore’s captivity, death and rediscovery is a truly fascinating murder-mystery, up there with Wolfe Tone and Michael Collins.

Cullivan’s show is dedicated the Mayo historian Stephen Dunford, who died in 2021, who was a lifelong devotee to French links to Ireland.
