After more than twenty years in the industry, the Mullingar artist has compiled a new body of work combining folk, alternative, and experimental influences.
His approach to music is rooted in the songwriter tradition, emphasising the importance of lyrics, performance, mood, and intention.
His songs can be contemplative, joyous, or playful, and his listening habits reflect a wide range of influences; from Miles Davis and Billie Holiday, to Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen, Wilco, Radiohead, Julian Lage, Felice Brothers, and Joe Henry.
Early inspirations from Irish artists such as Damien Rice, Fionn Regan, and The Frames continue to inform his work.
Doran’s evolution was also shaped by local mentors in Mullingar, including Jimmy Broder, who contributed to several tracks on the new album.
He has continuously drawn from this rich well of influences. His collaboration with Broder has resulted in some of the most dynamic and innovative tracks, like the experimental ‘Steamboat Captain’ and the moving ‘Marguerite’, which addresses a historical tragedy in his local community.
The album also includes contributions from frequent collaborators, including Picture This guitarist Nicky Brennan, Hozier’s drummer Fiachra Kinder, and cellist Gerard Toal, among others.
A central track, ‘Clockwork’, draws on his personal experience during the pandemic while awaiting news from his wife Therese’s prenatal ultrasound.
The song vividly captures the poignant, emotional journey through the streets of Mullingar as their lives are on the cusp of change.
Another key track, the lead single ‘Never Say Goodbye’, is accompanied by a music video directed by Josh Wagner.
