Battling social isolation through connection – Galway Contact

Galway Contact offers support for older people experiencing loneliness or social isolation in Galway city and surrounding areas. The voluntary organisation and registered charity, founded in 1981, provides befriending services, social clubs, and access to personal monitored alarms through the Seniors Alert Scheme.

A dedicated team of Garda-vetted volunteers is carefully matched with older individuals to build one-to-one friendships through weekly visits. New volunteers are always welcome. Older people who would like to be visited can refer themselves for the befriending service or be referred by family members, community nurses, or hospital health workers.

In addition to home visits, Galway Contact runs two morning clubs in Galway city centre where older people can meet their peers in a relaxed, friendly atmosphere, enjoy refreshments, chat, and take part in activities. Transport is provided where possible for those who need it.

The organisation also helps raise awareness of the Seniors Alert Scheme grant, which provides personal monitored alarms, enabling older people to live safely at home with greater peace of mind. Galway Contact processes grant applications for residents aged 65 and over throughout County Galway, making the process quick and easy.
