Big Country

On Saturday, August 30, Scottish rock band Big Country return to Monroe’s Live as part of their Eastworld international tour. Formed in 1981, the band achieved worldwide recognition with their debut album The Crossing, which included the singles Fields of Fire, Chance, and In a Big Country.

Having toured with The Rolling Stones, their brand of post-punk, new wave and Scottish folk was met with widespread acclaim. While the death of Stuart Adamson in 2001 put the band on hiatus, they have since reunited, continuing to celebrate his influence. Doors open at 7.30pm with support from Pistol Daisys. Tickets cost €30.

Amazing Apples

Afterwards, Galway’s very own The Amazing Apples will play a special late show in Monroe’s Backstage venue at 11pm. With raucous rock, indie and folk, this band need little introduction.

Their debut album A Little Sense reached number three in the Irish independent charts, and they have since appeared at major festivals including Electric Picnic, Indiependence, and Sea Sessions, as well as playing internationally. Tickets for this late-night performance cost €10.

Songwriters Open Mic Night

Looking ahead, on Tuesday, September 2, Monroe’s Backstage hosts its Songwriters Open Mic Night. Open to both emerging and established songwriters, sign-up runs from 7.30pm to 8pm, with performances from 8pm until 10pm. Entry is free.

Brìghde Chaimbeul

World-renowned Scottish piper, Brìghde Chaimbeul, performs on Wednesday, September 3, at 7pm as part of her Sunwise tour.

Originally from the Isle of Skye and now based in Belfast, her innovative approach to the Scottish smallpipes has earned her numerous accolades. Her third solo album, Sunwise, released earlier this year, draws on folklore and seasonal cycles from her upbringing.

The album is a song cycle about the Cailleach Bheur, a Gaelic hag who carved the landscape and every year ushers in the cold. Brìghde first gained recognition as a teenager, winning the BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Award at seventeen, and her work draws on piping traditions from Scotland, Ireland, Eastern Europe, and Cape Breton.

She will be joined on the night by special guest David Murphy. Tickets to this fully seated Backstage show are €22.50.
