Two Galway students have reason to celebrate after finishing first in Ireland, and the world, in their accountancy exams.

Elizabeth Howard, from Foster Street, and Aoife McWalters, from Conagher, both ranked joint first globally in their Taxation (TX ) exams and are Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA ) students at Dublin-based online and blended learning college, Accountancy School.

In addition, Aoife McWalters finished first in Ireland in a further three subjects and her worldwide rankings in those were 10th in Financial Management (FM ); 12th in Performance Management (PM ); and 18th in Financial Reporting (FR ).

Viewing their results in context, of the worldwide number of 500,000 ACCA students, approximately 8,000 of whom study in Ireland, Elizabeth and Aoife were two of 27 fellow Accountancy School students to finish first in Ireland. All were recognised for their achievements at a ceremony in Dublin recently.

“ACCA is a globally recognised accountancy qualification, and the key to a hugely rewarding career in accountancy and financial management, here in Ireland and internationally," said Dave O’Donoghue, managing director of Accountancy School.

“Against the backdrop of an acute worldwide shortage of accountants, ACCA trainees, affiliates and members are in high demand throughout the world,” Mr O’Donoghue added.
