Rentokil records national increase in rodent activity

Pest control provider Rentokil has reported a sharp increase in rat and mouse activity nationwide during the first quarter of 2025. The company recorded a 45 per cent increase in rat-related activity and a 39 per cent rise in mouse-related activity nationally in Q1 (January-March ) 2025 compared to the same period last year.

Regional data shows significant variations across the country. Cork experienced the most substantial rise, with a 107 per cent increase in rat activity and a 93 per cent increase in mouse activity. In the Limerick region, rat activity rose by 16 per cent, while mouse activity was up 47 per cent. The Border, Midlands, West, and North West region, which includes the counties of Galway, Mayo, Roscommon, Sligo, Cavan, Donegal, Leitrim, and Monaghan, saw a 12 per cent increase in rat activity and a 43 per cent increase in mouse activity.

"The significant increases we're seeing in both rat and mouse activity highlight the need for vigilance," said Colm Moore, regional technical manager for Rentokil. "We're urging home and business owners to act early by identifying the signs of pest presence and securing their properties."

Common signs of rat or mouse activity include droppings, scratching noises in walls or ceilings, footprints, and gnaw marks. Businesses, in particular, should be alert to the reputational damage and health risks associated with infestations, including the spread of disease through contact with rodent droppings or urine.

Rats remain the most common pest issue affecting Irish properties. They can cause serious structural damage by chewing through utility lines, electrical wiring, and insulation. Mice, while smaller, pose similar risks and can often go unnoticed until infestations are well-established.

"Rentokil now offers RADAR X, a bait-free, dual-chambered solution for internal mouse control," Mr Moore added. "It's an effective and discreet option for maintaining site protection and hygiene. For information on RADAR X, Flexi Armour, or other pest prevention options, visit the Rentokil website."

RADAR X is bait-free, internal solution has dual chambers to offer double trapping power and continuous protection. The unit uses a CO? despatch system to humanely and rapidly eliminate mice and is IP65-rated, meaning it's protected against dust and water jets. It also features HACCP-approved chambers that reduce contamination risk, making it a strong fit for sensitive environments.
