University of Galway students win three National Student Media Awards

This year’s National Student Media Awards (SMEDIAS ) took place in the Mansion House, Dublin, on Wednesday, April 9, and students from University of Galway took home three major awards on the night.

Emma van Oosterhout (Editor at SIN ) and Fiona Zokou (News Editor at SIN ) won 'Collaborative Journalism of the Year' for their investigation into sexual violence in Galway and on campus.

Vladyslav Piatin-Ponomarenko won the award for 'Film Documentary of the Year'. The award recognises Vlad’s emotional short documentary Imagine War - 75 Days of Survival in Mariupol, which documents his escape from Mariupol at the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Áine Ní Shíocháin won the award for 'Iriseoireacht trí Gaeilge (Scríofa )', for her article, 'RíRá agus Rince Seite', written for FlirtFM, which covers a fundraiser held by Cumann Rince Seite, Cumann Gaelach, Cumann Drámaíochta and Cumann Cheoil Tradisiúnta in aid of BÁNÚ, a group campaigning for fairer housing in the Gaeltacht.

Students from University of Galway were also nominated in several other categories, including 'Short Story of the Year', 'Film Script of the Year', 'Website of the Year' (for Galway Pulse ), and 'Iriseoireacht trí Gaeilge' (Raidió ).
