Decorated wartime codebreaker and noted musicologist Emily Anderson will be subject of a public talk at 8pm this Monday, March 11, at the Harbour Hotel.

The Galway Archaeological and Historical Society will host historian Jackie Uí Chionna to discuss the daughter of a president of Queen’s College Galway who worked for British military intelligence in both world wars.

During World War I Anderson worked as a codebreaker for the British military, and was one of the few women retained to work in intelligence during the inter-war period. She then served as a codebreaker at Bletchley Park, winning an OBE for her work during WWII.

Galway-born Anderson was publicly known as an exceptional musicologist, but her professional life as Britain’s greatest female codebreaker remained secret until recent publication of her biography, Queen of Codes by Dr Uí Chionna.
