ATU Galway art graduate Taïm Haimet has won the €10,000 Taylor Art Award after Royal Dublin Society (RDS ) judges hailed her as Ireland’s most promising emerging visual artist. Her visual art is inspired by her experiences as an Arabic interpreter for asylum seekers in Galway, and her own family’s stories from Syria.

Since 1860, the RDS Taylor Award has been awarded to artists as illustrious as Walter Osbourne, William Orpen, Mainie Jellett, Norah McGuinness, Séan Keating, Dorothy Cross and James Hanley.

In their comments on Haimet’s art, the judges said: “Her work is very conceptually complete, it is clear and resolved. Evokes strong emotional response. Addresses pertinent issues in a deeply pertinent and visceral way. We felt it was a very complete installation and deserving of the RDS Taylor Art Award.”
