Homage to Russian maestro in exile

Music for Galway’s International Concert Season performance of Rachmaninov has been rescheduled to next week.

Award-winning British pianist Lucy Parham and BAFTA, Oliver and Tony Award winning-actor Simon Russell Beale present ‘A Heart In Exile’ in Galway’s Hardiman Hotel on Tuesday, September 26, and in Athenry’s Raheen Woods Hotel on Thursday, October 19.

The evening performances concentrate on Rachmaninov’s political exile – mainly in America – having been forced from his homeland in 1918 by the Russian Revolution.

At the age of 44, Rachmaninov left Moscow for Sweden on an open sleigh, accompanied by his wife and two daughters carrying nothing but a suitcase. He was never to return – but he left his heart forever in Russia.

Parham and Beale will recount the Russian pianist’s life through both music and readings from his letters and diaries.
