Discover the rich heritage of Gran Canaria

Clodagh Connolly from Fahy Travel has recently returned from a trip to Gran Canaria, in conjunction with the Spanish tourist office.

Gran Canaria is one of Spain’s Canary Islands, off north-western Africa. It's known for its black lava and white sand beaches. Its southern beaches include bustling Playa del Ingles and Puerto Rico as well as quieter Puerto de Mogan and San Agustin. In the north, capital city Las Palmas is a major stop for cruise ships and duty-free shopping. Las Palmas is the largest city on the Canary Islands, its beautiful Las Canteras Beach, the gastronomic markets, and old quarters of Vegueta and Triana, with its historical buildings that have been standing there from the 15th century - Cathedral, Columbus House, Santa Ana square and much more, perfect for a day trip.

Another day trip is to visit the Agüimes village, in the southeast of Gran Canaria. It is known for its beautiful historic quarter, built around the Parish Church of San Sebastian 300 years ago. The area is well known for its natural and pre-Hispanic heritage of great value and is popular for active and nature tourism. Clodagh visited the spectacular Guayadeque ravine, home to more than 80 endemic species and unique cave houses where you can enjoy a very good Canarian food and even stay. She got to taste local coffee and refreshments in Tagoror cave restaurant, before heading to the coast for a visit of the Salinas de Tenefé, the 20,000sq m of salt pans built towards the end of the 18th century.

While in Gran Canaria, Clodagh got to see a selection of four and five-star hotels on the island, a mixture of family and adult-only properties. She also visited some beautiful wineries included in the Gran Canaria Wine Route, the only one on the Canary Islands certified by Spanish Wine Association ACEVIN.

Gran Canaria has so much to offer apart from sun, sea, and sand. With flights from Shannon during the winter, and Dublin and Cork during the summer it is the perfect getaway and has something for everybody.
