Football championship gets down to business with tasty ties

The Galway Senior football Championship starts to hot up this weekend with the clash of several title hopefuls.

In group one results have gone as expected thus far in what is, on paper, the toughest group. The ‘big boys’ - Corofin, Moycullen and Tuam Stars - are yet to play each other and have claimed maximum points from their first two fixtures, but that changes this weekend with the big clash of Corofin v Moycullen on Saturday evening in Pearse Stadium. Much more will be known about the trajectory of these two teams when that game is concluded.

Tuam will be looking to make it three from three as they face Oughterard. Meanwhile An Spideál and Naomh Anna Leitir Móir will be aiming to get some points on the board as they play each other on Sunday.

The two top teams of group two, Salthill-Knocknacarra and Mountbelew-Moylough, play each other in one of the ties of the weekend on Sunday evening. The seasiders, under the stewardship of John O’Mahony, will be dreaming of turning over the current champions after two impressive showings to date.

Alan Flynn’s Annaghdown will be hopeful of their first points this weekend against a St James’ side that suffered a heavy defeat last time out to Barna. The last fixture of the group is Barna versus An Cheathrú Rua, which will be a highly competitive affair.

Milltown have been leading the way so far in group three with two excellent performances against Killanin and St Michael’s. They have been scoring freely, but this scoring prowess may be dampened slightly after their inside forward Eoin Mannion suffered an ankle injury, the severity of this injury is yet unknown. They face Caherlistrane Friday evening, who will be looking to bounce back from their loss against Killanin.

With this group wide open, this set of fixtures in group 3 seems particularly crucial to all teams. St Michael’s play Killanin on Saturday afternoon as both teams aim to move to four points. Monivea-Abbey will be hopeful of moving from the foot of the table as they battle with Claregalway on Sunday.
