Triple gold for Craughwell’s Hallinan

Craughwell AC's Alan Hallinan was star of the show at the Connacht juvenile track and field championships at the weekend.

Among the multiple Galway medal winners and qualifiers for the upcoming All Ireland, Hallinan won triple Connacht titles with victories in the 60m hurdles in 10.44, the long jump with a leap of 4.33, and the 600m in 1:44.90.

The juvenile events were held alongside the adult track and field championships at the AIT outdoor track in Athlone.

At senior level, Kathryn Casserly of GCH coninues her strong form, claiming the women's 3000m, just ahead of clubmate Jane Ann Meehan. Saoirse Coleman of GCH was fastest in the junior girls for GCH over 800m, with Torin McGuire of South Galway fastest in the men’s 800m.

Cian Coyne won 1500m gold for GCH, as did Caoimhe Kelleher over 1500m for South Galway AC in the women's race.

In the sprints, Laura Nally won the 100m for GCH, Sinead Treacy won 400m gold for Craughwell, with Alix Joyce of Tuam winning the 400 hurdles. Multi eventer GCH athlete Mathieu Madden won a super double over 100 flat and 400m hurdles.

In the field events, Ella Rafferty for Tuam AC won double gold in shot and discus, while in the men’s Liam Shaw of Athenry and Pierce McManus of GCH picked up golds at junior and senior level respectively.

Galway County Championships

Galway athletes faced windy conditions on day two at Dangan for the Galway County Track and Field Championships.

Robert Meagher of GCH and Sinead Treacy of Craughwell won golds over 200m, with Mathieu Madden and Michelle Nnadi claiming 400 hurdles wins.

An exciting men’s 800m saw Kyle Moorhead win for Craughwell in 1.57, with Caoimhe Kelleher of South Galway taking the women's gold.

In the distance races, Catherine Thornton of GCH won the 3000m, with Abas Edris winning 5000m gold for Castlegar.

In the field events, Richard Kamson of GCH jumped farthest in long jump, while Pierce McManus, Liam Shaw, Thomas Farragher, Mary Barrett and Ella Rafferty were among the medals in the discus and weight throws.

Portumna Forest Races

The Portumna Forest park series of races was held on Saturday with four races on the card. The longest event, the 50k race, was won by Louis Coyne of GCH in an impressive 3 hours 25 minutes, with first woman home Katarzyna Bobka in 3.40.

Michael Bagnall won the marathon in 2.49, with Rosarii Dune the women's race victor. Connell Swords of GCH won the half marathon in 1.22, with Maeve Flannery winning the women's race in 1.32. Nikita Cassidy won the women's 10km and Ed Maher claimed the honours in the men's event in 36.20.
