Free treatments for Europeans visiting Ireland

Free hyperbaric oxygenation treatments are available at OxyGeneration under the European Union Cross-Border Healthcare Directive. Unfortunately, it Is only (outside of Ireland ) European residents who can use OxyGeneration. Irish people have to go abroad under the directive if they cannot get a suitable appointment in the National Hyperbaric Medical Unit at UHG. Any medical professional in consultation with the patient can give a letter of referral, including a nurse, a dentist or doctor.

Conditions covered

There is no inclusion or exclusion list of conditions in most countries including Ireland. All conditions are covered for the free sessions providing there is a letter of referral. The conditions can range from dementia, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s to any tissue injury no matter where in the body. Hyperbaric oxygenation is also used to help prevent limb amputations or in Inflammatory Bowel Disease to prevent bowel removal or other surgery. Well being or prevention is covered. Recovery from any surgery is popular.

People covered

Entitled people (generally EU citizens resident in the particular country ) can access healthcare in other EU or EEA member states. For instance, a Polish or French family ordinarily living in another EU member state can stay in Galway and arrange sessions that are paid for by the hosting member state. The prior approval procedure works best, but this is not technically necessary when all the conditions apply. In short, Irish people can go to any EU country and other Europeans can come to Ireland.
