United triumph in Wexford

John Caulfield's improving team scored three second half goals

This is unfolding into an exciting SSE Airtricity League first division campaign for Galway United, who did what was required to carve out a win over Wexford FC at Ferrycarrig Park.

Ian Ryan's sterling work since taking charge of Wexford is worthy of the utmost respect, but without a couple of key players they just couldn't cope with United's depth.

Ultimately, that was the difference as Padraic Cunningham and Shane Doherty made goalscoring contributions in the second period as United pocketed the full complement of spoils.

Spirited and stubborn, Wexford were crafty enough also to pounce for a goal on the stroke of half-time.

The promising Jack Moylan, on loan from Bohemians, manufactured just enough space in the area to rattle the back of the United net.

United had created chances at the opposite end, but two had two goals ruled out for offside. One of the decisions appeared to be extremely tight.

Thomas Oluwa, Maurice Nugent, and Ruairi Keating all went close for the visitors, who were subsequently rocked when Moylan struck.

United summoned Cunningham from the bench with the Headford native announcing his arrival in the 55th minute.

Following a swift exchange with Mikey Place, Cunningham unleashed a blistering left footed finish. Parity was restored.

United hit the front on 64 when Cunningham's effort was saved by Jimmy Corcoran, but Killian Brouder guided the visitors' ahead.

Other United substitutes were involved in the third with Stephen Walsh's attempt extracting a good save from Corcoran, but Doherty scored beautifully from the rebound.

United's next assignment is against Cork City at Eamonn Deacy Park on Friday.
