Billy Clery's Galway WFC enjoyed a 3-1 pre-season victory over Athlone Town at Maree/Oranmore's splendid all facility on Saturday afternoon.

With the March 27 WNL Eamonn Deacy Park WNL opener against Cork City edging closer a promising Galway outfit seized control in the first half.

Mayo footballer Rachel Kearns netted a brace, while Aoife Thompson also scored for Clery's developing team.

Several promising emerging players in the squad, including Kate Slevin, impressed for Galway, who will face Athlone again on Wednesday evening.

Tommy Hewitt's youthful and improving Athlone side, who narrowed the gap courtesy of a deflected effort after the restart, can reflect with satisfaction on another gutsy display.
