Rural areas of Oranmore and Clarinbridge to get high-speed fibre broadband

"There has been a fundamental change in the way we live and work, and connectivity is key," says Minister Hildegarde Naughton

Rural areas of Oranmore and Clarenbridge will be getting high-speed fibre broadband within the coming weeks, it has been confirmed.

Parts of Rinville, the Maree Road, and Ballynamanagh East in Clarinbridge would be among the first areas to be connected to the high-speed network in 2021 as part of a €153 milliion investment in Galway. More than 3,500 premises have been surveyed to date in Galway and network designs have been completed for the delivery of a Fibre-to-the-Home network in these areas.

The development has been welcomed by Fine Gael Galway West TD, and Minister of State, Hildegarde Naughton, who said homes will have standards download speeds of 500MB after they are connected.

'A fundamental change'

“There has been a fundamental change in the way we live and work, and connectivity is key. High-speed broadband has never been more important for homes, farms, businesses and community organisations,” she said. “The investment will facilitate e-learning, remote working, e-health initiatives, wider use of agri-technology, more online commerce, and better energy efficiency in homes."

Current works will be followed by the deployment of fibre on poles or in ducts, as well as the erection of poles, unblocking of ducts, and the insertion of sub-ducts for the fibre to be installed.
