Beyond Veganuary — what happens next?

For some, the idea of doing Veganaury was the beginning of a new lifestyle and the perfect feel-good start to 2020. However it may have become more difficult than first thought, some would have fallen at the first hurdle in the opening week in January, or at the first visit to a restaurant. So, as Veganaury ends for another year, what happens next?

For those who struggled in January, the transition may have been too much too soon. If you cannot go full vegan straight away but still want to embrace the vegan lifestyle, how about taking a softer approach? Some people find relying on vegan alternatives and convenience foods very helpful in easing the transition to veganism. At Evergreen we stock plenty of vegan friendly food and supplements to help you on your way.

There are various manageable approaches to try when becoming vegan:

Slow transition from omnivore to vegan

Try to slowly lessen your consumption of animal products while simultaneously increasing the number of plant-based foods in your diet. Use this strategy until you have eliminated all animal products from your diet. This could be done in various ways:

Eat one plant based meal per week and try building that up over a period of time.

Pick one meal each day to be plant based and increase that as the days go by.

Split the week into sections, stick to a plant based diet from Monday to Friday and use the weekend to satisfy any other food cravings you may have.

Vegetarian followed by veganism

Go vegetarian, and then move onto veganism either in one step or by cutting out dairy and eggs one at a time.

If you do slip up and end up eating something not plant based, by accident or on purpose, then don’t get too down about it. It is important to remember you are just trying to do the least harm to animals and the environment. For now, that is the best you can do, so keep trying.
