Cúirt Announces first names for 2019 festival

Jeanette Winterson, Joshua Cohen, and Dervla Murphy to read at city's literature festival

Jeanette Winterson, best known as the author of Oranges Are Not The Only Fruit, and Joshua Cohen, listed as one of Granta’s Best of Young American Novelists in 2017, will read at next year's Cúirt festival.

The Cúirt International Festival of Literature has announced highlights of the 2019 festival which runs from April 8 to 14. The full festival line-up will be announced in early March. One of the themes of the festival will be ‘witness’.

Alongside Winterson and Cohen, other writers coming to the festival include the American poet and two time Pushcart prize recipient, Patricia Smith; legendary Irish travel writer and author of the classic, Full Tilt, Dervla Murphy; Irish poet, Thomas McCarthy; and Galway native, Prof Fionnuala Ní Aoláin, who is the current Special Rapporteur to the United Nations on the Protection and Promotion of Human Rights while Countering Terrorism.

“I’m confident next year’s festival will once again delight and surprise with its mix of the familiar and the unexpected," says progamme director, Emily Cullen. "Our line-up of authors in 2019 is distinctively international and will feature writers from Japan, New Zealand, Italy, Spain, Slovenia, France, the US, England and, of course, many wonderful Irish writers."
