The next best thing to seeing Thelonious Monk on stage

Pálás and Galway Jazz Festival to screen classic in-concert film Jazz On A Summer's Day

Thelonious Monk.

Thelonious Monk.

THELONIOUS MONK, Dinah Washington, Louis Armstrong, Anita O'Day, The Jimmy Guiffre Trio, and Mahalia Jackson - where could you have seen such an extraordinary line up of jazz and gospel musicians?

They all shared the stage of the 1958 Newport Jazz Festival in Rhode Island, regarded as one of the most legendary live music experiences there has ever been. The event was also recorded in the landmark film Jazz On A Summer's Day, which has recently been restored and remastered.

The Pálás Cinema and the Galway Jazz Festival will host a screening of this film on Sunday October 7 at 11am. This was the first full-colour jazz concert film to be made. Its director was commercial and fashion photographer Bert Stern, then best known for his black and white photographs of Marilyn Monroe. In 1999, the film was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".
