Considering Galway led from pillar to post against the pre-match favourites, it seems a tad harsh to say that the Tribesmen were fortunate to progress, but they did profit from a large slice of luck in the opening minute when man of the match Jack Grealish’s effort slipped through the hands of Cork ‘keeper Patrick Collins to the back of the net.

Four Galway schools in finals

Four Galway schools are in action on next Tuesday in the finals of the SPAR FAI Primary School Fives in the Aviva Stadium.

Castlegar School, Letterfrack NS, and Oranmore's Gaelscoil de hIde and Scoil Mhuire are four of the 28 schools through to the finals of the competition which saw 1,081 schools take part with 56,212 students involved. It was also the first year that Special Schools (Football For All element) participated, with 16 schools making the most of the experience and a further four participating in the finals on May 17.

Lisa O’Rourke, contesting the 70g, won her first bout by unanimous decision on day one. O'Rourke, contested out of the blue corner when she met Mbabi Brigitte of the Democratic Republic of Congo. With an assured and confident performance, O'Rourke, also a Roscommon footballer, dominated every round to take the bout. She next meets Dominican Republic’s Maria Hernandez Moronta in Friday’s evening session.
