Al Waterson claimed his seventh Rooney doubles title at the annual Ray Rooney Tournament at Galway Lawn Tennis Club recently.

As always the tournament produced some of the finest doubles play of the year, and Al Waterson, partnered by Alec Sandys, swept through the group stages to defeat the Irish international pair of Donal Hegarty and Pat Dillon in the final.

Galway handballers claimed two All Ireland titles at the weekend when the adult doubles finals took centre stage across Leinster venues.

Sinead Ní Ainlí and Ciana Ní Churraoin had a convincing 21-2, 21-2 win against their Clare counterparts to win the ladies' intermediate crown, while Jimmy Connaughton and Martin Ward produced a great performance over a strong Westmeath pairing to take home another title, winning 21-8, 21-18

Two fighters from the Galway Black Dragon Kickboxing Club were in action in Dungarvan on Saturday night and won All Ireland titles in two different rule sets.

Adam Keane from Tuam, who won the senior national kickboxing title at 69.5kg last March, but lost it on a close points decision in September, regained the title with an impressive victory over Ulster Champ Paul Kelly from Cookstown in a five round war that went the full distance.

Footballers miss chance for promotion

The Galway footballers tried might and main on Sunday to beat Cavan in Breffni Park and win the opportunity to play division one football next season. However it was not to be as Terry Hyland’s team deservedly won by 1-16 to 1-12.

Cavan will now play Tyrone in the league final on Sunday week and be in the top tier for 2017 for the first time in 15 years.
