East Galway first for CLÁR responders groups to get funding

Eyrecourt and District Cardiac First Responders Group and Killascobe Community Defibrillator Group are set to benefit through funding from the Department of Rural and Community Development.

Eyrecourt and District Cardiac First Responders Group will receive €2,411 and Killascobe Community Defibrillator Group will receive €5,202. The funding is being issued under Measure 3a of the CLÁR programme, which is aimed at funding equipment and services for first responder groups.

Hanley accuses Government unwillingness to 'implement Airbnb rules'

The Government's unwillingness to introduce new enforcement rules on short-term letting and its willingness to be lobbied by Airbnb, shows it is "missing in action" when tackling "the multi-faceted aspects of the housing crisis".

This is the view of Social Democrats Galway City East councillor Owen Hanley, who was speaking after it emerged that the Government had "ignored expert advice" to introduce strong enforcement rules following lobbying by Airbnb during meetings with ministers.

Homelessness in the west increases as Simon launches new campaign

More than 500 people, including close to 200 children, in the west of Ireland are having to live in emergency accommodation, with the west the only region of the State to show an increase in the number of those homeless.

This is according to The Simon Community which has launched its Closing The Door On Homelessness campaign. It said the homeless and accommodation crisis in the west was "acute" with 534 people, including 199 children, in emergency accommodation in hotels, hostels and B&Bs at the end of June.

Record field of runners will take to the streets of Galway

The Simon Communities launched their Closing the Door on Homelessness campaign this week. The charity, which is marking 50 years since its foundation in Ireland in 1969, has launched the campaign to tell the stories of people it has supported to close the door on homelessness. In the campaign, Simon Community clients will be sharing their experiences of the safety and security of closing their own front door behind them. In 2018, the Simon Communities around the country ‘closed the door’ for more than 2,400 men, women and children across Ireland, helping them move out of homelessness and into a secure home.

Security tightened at city mosque as fear grows after racist attack

Security is to be tightened at the Masjid Maryam mosque on the Old Monivea Road, following an attack on the building which was widely considered to be racist and Islamophobic in motivation.

The mosque is the chief centre of worship for the city's Ahmadiyya Muslim community, and enjoyed a reputation as a welcoming environment for non-Muslims and a point of interfaith outreach and bridge building between Muslims and the wider community. The ability to provide such services is now in jeopardy as there are fears that repeat attacks on the building, or on worshippers, could follow.

Extra bus services are on the way for Moycullen, Rosscahill, and Oughterard, after the National Transport Authority agreed to licence evening and nighttime services to the areas.

The NTA has agreed to licence two additional services to Bus Éireann for the Galway to Moycullen and Oughterard routes. The NTA has confirmed the licence will include additional services from Galway at 20.15 and 22.15, seven days a week.
