Intensified competition between Irish airports over passengers and airlines will have severe consequences for economic activity and jobs outside the Greater Dublin Area, a report by international economic consultants and partly commisioned by Galway Chamber, has warned.

The report by Denmark’s Copenhagen Economics found that significant capacity expansion planned for Dublin Airport will make it very difficult for other airports to maintain current routes and passenger levels.

LATEST UPDATE FROM GALWAY CITY COUNCIL RE STORM LORENZO - ISSUED 1.30 THURSDAY

The Joint City and County Co-ordination Group met this morning to discuss the latest precautionary measures to be implemented in advance of the arrival of Storm Lorenzo. Present at the meeting were members of Roads Department, Environment Department and other key staff from both Galway City Council and Galway County Council. Also present were members of the fire service, the Civil Defence and the HSE Ambulance Service. Topics covered at the meeting included an update on the current progress of Storm Lorenzo, as well as operations in relation to sandbags, car park closures and road closures.

It is important to note that Met Éireann has updated the Status Orange Wind Warning for Galway. The warning has now been extended to 6.00am Friday 4th October. There still remains a significant risk on coastal areas not just from over topping but also inundation i.e. high energy waves hitting the coastline.

Following a meeting of Galway County Council Crisis Management Team to assess the current weather conditions, weather warnings have been updated and the status orange weather warning remains in place for Galway. Storm force winds and gusts are expected with extremely high seas. Rainfall is likely to be heavy throughout this evening and tonight. Flooding including coastal flooding and wave overtopping is likely.

Status orange wind warning remains in place for Galway from 6pm today Thursday until 6am Friday.

The astro-turf facility at Cappagh Park will be getting floodlights next year, which will allow the facility to stay open into the late evening. The news was described as “very positive” by one councillor.

At Monday’s city council meeting, councillors were informed that floodlights will be erected at the astro-turf facility at Cappagh Park. Tender documents have been prepared, a company to carry out the work is to be chosen, and works will begin in early 2020. It will be fully funded by the council and will not depend on funding from the Capital Sports Grants.
