More than two in five people in Ireland would not want to know if a loved one was experiencing depression, according to findings in the 2011 Lundbeck Mental Health Barometer. Despite this, 93 per cent of respondents agree that it is important that depression is discussed openly. However when asked if they would find it difficult to discuss depression with their doctor 70 per cent agreed.

A national attitudinal survey about Irish adults’ digestive health conducted on behalf of Danone Activia has found that the majority of Irish adults are suffering in silence from digestive health issues despite the fact that poor digestive health can potentially lead to more serious health issues.
The survey found that digestive discomfort causes 30 per cent of Galwegians to feel less attractive, while seven per cent claim digestive discomfort impacts on their libido.

The College of Hairdressing Connaught has just launched its new courses for 2011 at Kiltartan House, Galway, and at its satellite centre in Castlebar, Co Mayo.
Due to the economic downturn students are now finding it harder to get jobs in hairdressing salons. To counteract this, the College of Hairdressing Connaught will now offer a part-time City & Guilds course to be held evenings and Mondays. This gives everybody the opportunity to gain a City & Guilds Level 2 certificate on a part-time basis and emphasises the importance of gaining qualifications in their chosen career. This course would also be suitable for those who meet the Back to Education Allowance criteria.
