Let's go outside

Thu, Jun 20, 2019

We have many restaurants and cafes that are fantastic come rain or shine, but as what is rare is wonderful, there is something special about being able to dine outdoors in Galway. Whether you are grabbing a sandwich from McCambridge's and heading to the 'Sp'arch', or having the full three courses outside Kirwan's Lane, it is hard to beat a bit of al fresco. In a city full of well utilised nooks and crannies there is plenty to choose from, apart from obviously the entirety of Quay Street — here are just a few of our favourites.

The King's Head is a piece of architectural history, a veritable medieval super-pub run by the Grealish family. With three storeys it is a big premises and must appeal to a broad audience to fill the seats. At more than 800 years old, this popular bar has free live music every night, big screen sports, occasional lunchtime comedy, and serves fresh food every day. Inside it is dark and atmospheric, the original medieval fireplace always has a welcoming blaze. Looking out on busy High Street, the comparatively small frontage belies its large interior.

Lunch is ready in Galway’s favourite Gastropub

Thu, Jun 06, 2019

One of the most successful refurbishments of the many we have seen in recent years here in Galway is undoubtedly that of John Keoghs, The Lock Keeper on Upper Dominick Street. This pub and restaurant opened in Galway’s West End in spring 2016, developed by Matt Hall, a Galway resident, as a sister venue to MacBride’s Bar in Westport, Co Mayo. The pub and restaurant take its name from a real character called John Keogh who really was the lock keeper of the adjacent Parkaveara canal lock on the Eglinton Canal in the middle to late 19th century.

Jian bing — a crepe like no other

Thu, Jun 06, 2019

Jian bing is a traditional Chinese street food created nearly 2,000 years ago in the Shandong Province. It is a thin and crispy crepe made with corn, mung bean, rye, and buckwheat and flavoured with black and white sesame seeds.

Xian Street Food serves it as a savoury option with slow cooked duck or beef, or the vegetarian jian bing with fafafel and mixed salad. Of course the jian bing can also be vegan so just ask when you are ordering. For something sweeter, try the Nutella and strawberry jian bing, or with fresh cream, strawberries, and banana. The simple pleasure of the Jian Bing drizzled with lemon juice and some sugar is also a favourite.
