Galway Community College's legal secretary, medical secretary, and office administrator course is extremely popular due to its continued success rate, with 90 per cent of its graduates obtaining full-time and part-time employment in legal practice, medical practice, hospital administration, public service, and as office administrators in multinational companies within six months of graduating. The remainder of the students’ progress to higher education courses in ATU, University of Galway, and apprenticeship programmes.

It is a full-time course qualifying with an office administration award at QQI Level 5. Students obtain the following skillsets: proficient in the usage of software packages such as MS Office Suite, Olympus Audio Transcription, 50 wpm typing speed, and producing legal, medical, and general documents in a range of commonly used business layouts and styles.

GCC further education students engage in Erasmus+ work placements

Erasmus+ is an EU programme that can help students to travel to experience work, study, or training in another country. Galway Community College of Further Education (GCC) introduced Erasmus mobilities for students and staff in 2016, giving further education students an opportunity to complete their work experience, a mandatory element of their course, in European countries.

These Erasmus placements are fully funded by Leargas Ireland, offering bursaries for travel, accommodation, and living expenses for the two-week placement. By studying abroad with Erasmus+, GCC's further education (FE) students improve their communication, language, and intercultural skills and gain soft skills highly valued by future employers. GCC is committed to the 2021-2027 programme, which places a strong focus on social inclusion, the green and digital transitions, and promoting young people’s participation in democratic life.

One-to-one Junior Cert tuition

FCL Galway is offering Junior Certificate maths classes on a one-to-one basis and there are a few limited places remaining. The classes are delivered online, but Frank Murphy will meet the students and parents in person initially to explain exactly how the classes are formatted and how they can gain maximum benefit from the tuition.

Many students in the early months of secondary school really struggle with the pace and content of maths class. They may have found maths in primary school manageable, but all of a sudden, things have really picked up and they are onto a new topic without having fully grasped the last one. In larger classes and in unfamiliar surroundings they are often reluctant to ask for clarification. The maths course is so extensive that as the teachers push on, students often get left behind.

E-mails, mobile phones, cameras, texting, and numerous websites and chat groups such as Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, and Tik Tok are being used by young people to bully other young people and their friends in and out of school. Photographic images are used which can be seen by strangers as well as people known to you. This can harm the online image of the person involved. Cyberbullying can be persistent and permanent in some instances. Sometimes it can be very hard to notice as teachers or parents/guardians have not picked up on it online.
