Sundays on Sandy Road

Fri, Apr 22, 2016

The Maldron Hotel on Sandy Road has had various incarnations. The Courtyard by Marriot Hotel, as it was many moons ago, changed to the Pillo Hotel and most recently became a Maldron, sister hotel to the Oranmore Maldron. A modern building on the the fringes of the city, this is a landmark with its glazed exterior and its location opposite The Menlo Park. The glass frontage points you towards the Headford Road, and inside, the high-vaulted reception space combines international airport chic and modern design which has not dated since opening as The Courtyard over a decade ago. Set back from the busy road that encircles the city, it also has the advantage of being just minutes from the centre of town with free underground parking.

Attentive service starts at the front desk and you are directed to the Point Bar and Olive Tree Bistro area to one side, a darker, more cosy, space in contrast. The bar is always buzzing at the weekend, it is a popular lunch spot for sports enthusiasts with its big screens visible from most seats. The bistro is quieter and more conducive to a relaxed meal. It is popular with families and there are usually a few couples with young children in tow. The menu reflects the Sunday clientele, a compact but well-judged menu featuring a traditional Sunday roast with many other family favourites on offer. It represents good value and is also served in the bar area.

‘Shoots’

Thu, Apr 21, 2016

Many people will remember ‘Shoots’ as one of the most lovable and delightful characters on the streets of Galway. He was a small man with a big moustache, big glasses, and a big personality. His real name was Michael Tuite. He was reared in Artane in Dublin but came to live here at a time when it was mostly cowboy pictures that were shown in our cinemas. Michael was a fan and began to act as if he himself was a cowpoke. Galwegians gradually changed the greeting “Howya Tuite” to “Shoots”, probably with a little help from the man himself.

‘If we do nothing else we shall rid Ireland of three bad poets’

Thu, Apr 21, 2016

Poetry more than any other art form is intimately connected with the events of Easter 1916. Three of the executed signatories of the Proclamation, Padraic Pearse, Thomas MacDonagh (Tomás Mac Donnchadha) and Joseph Mary Plunkett were recognised poets of their day, who had used their poems to espouse the cause of revolutionary nationalism.

The most attractive personality among them was MacDonagh. He had met Pearse when they were both learning Irish on Inish Meann. He liked and admired Pearse believing he had the potential to be ’the greatest of Irish writers in imagination and power, if not in language’.

‘The face and voice of the coming revolution’

Thu, Apr 14, 2016

Week IV
It was a strange coincidence that within a mile or so of Pearse’s cottage at Ros Muc is the handsome Inver Lodge where William Humble Ward, 2nd Earl of Dudley, the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland (1902-1905) would stay for the summer, fishing and touring Connemara. Lord Dudley represented the might and power of imperial Britain; while close by was Padraig Pearse, the man who would vow to wrench Ireland away from its grip.

East meets West at Wa Cafe

Thu, Apr 14, 2016

Wa Cafe is bijou and bright, a 15 seat sushi restaurant tucked away down by the docks that was opened by Yoshimi Hayakawa on 8/8/2008. This date is no coincidence, the number eight is considered a very lucky number in Japanese culture. It was indeed lucky for us. At Wa the rice is soft, sticky, and delicious, and the food is authentically Japanese, from sushi rolls, miso soup, and bento boxes to green teas. The menu is short with a rotating choice of specials ensuring there is always something new, with a good choice for vegetarians.
