Cara Cabs in Eyre Square have arranged a 12 month contract with GMIT Technical Institute Students Union to serve all of their students transport requirements for 2010/11.

Cara Cabs have been associated with the GMIT Students Union for approximately 10 years now and both parties have built up a solid working relationship. In the interest of student safety, Cara Cabs devised a system called ‘Don’t Walk Home Alone.’ This was done in conjunction with the GMIT Students Union, and this model has now been successfully copied by a number of other institutions nationwide.

NUI Galway was named in the top three big winners, securing over € 60 million in research funding under PRTLI Cycle 5 - the Programme for Research in Third Level Institutions, announced last weekend by An Taoiseach, Mr Brian Cowen T.D.

The NUI Galway projects funded include three new world-class research facilities, an Arts Humanities Social Sciences Research Building and two buildings dedicated to biomedical science research, with a combined cost of €50m.

Galway-based JFC Manufacturing wins prestigious environment product award

JFC Manufacturing, Tuam-based plastics company has received a prestigious European Business Award for the Environment from IBEC in the best product category.

JFC Manufacturing won the award for developing a new storm water management system. The team at JFC researched, prototyped and developed a new type of pipe that is manufactured from 100 per cent recycled material. The pipes deliver water to a purpose-built water retention system that collects water during peak rainfall times and regulates the outflow after the peak rainfall. The system also controls and minimises flooding.
