From struggle to strength: local women inspire weight-loss success

In a culture that often favours quick fixes over lasting change, two local women, Tanith O’Brien and Susan Grehan, are proving that real transformation stems from belief in yourself, supportive networks, and the right tools. Together, they’ve lost more than 10.5 stone through Slimming World in less than a year — and have now trained as consultants to guide others on their journeys to health and confidence.

For Tanith, the decision to join Slimming World was about more than weight loss. Facing mobility struggles, pre-diabetes, perimenopause, and declining self-esteem, she sought a way to rediscover herself. A full-time carer to two beautiful daughters, she found not just a food plan but also a community. The results have been life-changing: now 6 stone 2lbs lighter, she no longer needs blood pressure medication, her blood sugars are back to normal, and her energy has transformed. Remarkably, she has even taken up running — once unthinkable. Her message is simple yet powerful: “You are worth it.”

Susan’s journey followed a different path. After 21 years in the Defence Forces, she retired to spend more time with her young children but soon struggled with low self-worth as her weight affected her identity. Though active, she realised exercise alone couldn’t compensate for poor nutrition. Inspired by her mother’s success with Slimming World, she embraced the programme and overhauled her lifestyle. The impact was profound: improved health, renewed confidence, and a shared achievement with her mother. Together, they’ve lost more than 9 stone, reaching their target weights and proving that “Slimming World is a family affair.”

Both Tanith and Susan credit their success to Slimming World’s Food Optimising plan, which emphasises satisfying, family-friendly meals without restriction. Coupled with activity support and encouragement to reframe mindset and habits, the programme fosters long-term success. Now, as consultants, they are determined to support others who once felt the way they did — stuck, uncertain, and searching for change.

Their stories highlight that lasting transformation is not about perfection but persistence, community, and support to build self-belief. By sharing their experiences, Tanith and Susan hope to inspire others to reclaim their health and confidence and rediscover joy — one step at a time.

Susan relaunches the Ballinasloe Slimming World group on Tuesday, September 23 at 5.30pm and 7pm in the Shearwater Hotel, and Tanith's Gort group commences in the Lady Gregory Hotel on Wednesday, September 24 also at 5.30pm and 7pm.
