Appalachian and Celtic fusion

Folk artist Jessie Monk

Folk artist Jessie Monk

Australian avant-folk musician Jessie Monk will perform at Monroe’s Live on Friday, August 22, at 9:30pm, when audiences can listen to her combine Celtic and Appalachian folk traditions with experimental elements.

Now based between Melbourne/Naarm and Berlin, she draws on influences ranging from Joni Mitchell and Anna Mieke, to the poetry of Rilke and Ovid.

Often joined by musicians Fabiana Striffler, Max Andrzejewski, Paul Santner, and Conor Cunningham, her performances balance traditional storytelling with a more exploratory, modern sound.

She sings boundless and fearless folk songs inspired by the people she meets, stories she hears and thresholds she walks through.

An accomplished actor and dancer, Monk has appeared in productions including the Australian premiere of David Bowie’s Lazarus and the national tour of Anaïs Mitchell’s Hadestown.

Her 2023 debut album Boundless Folk earned critical acclaim, and her release, Mis O’ The Mountains is a concept album inspired by the ancient Celtic goddess, Mis.

Monk describes song-writing as less a craft and more of an emotional mediation process. She cites both city life and quiet natural settings as fertile ground for inspiration.

Her influences include Jeff Buckley, Fleetwood Mac, Leonard Cohen, and more contemporary artists such as Phoebe Bridgers and Laura Marling

Join Jessie Monk in the intimate surrounds of Monroe’s Backstage venue on Friday, August 22. Doors at 9.30pm.
