Fáilte Ireland, in partnership with the Connemara and Aran Islands Tourism Network (CAITN ), has launched two innovative self-guided digital trails designed to attract more visitors to Connemara and encourage them to stay longer, explore deeper, and support local businesses.
The Connemara Sheep and Wool Trail celebrates the region’s rich heritage in wool production, guiding visitors through 14 locations. Seven primary sites offer immersive experiences such as sheepdog demonstrations, wool spinning, weaving, and natural dyeing. Highlights include the Connemara Sheep and Wool Centre in Leenane, Killary Sheep Farm, Joyce Country Sheepdogs, and the Inis Meáin Knitting Company, where the iconic Aran jumper tradition continues to thrive. The trail aims to connect visitors with Connemara’s living culture and centuries-old craftsmanship while supporting rural livelihoods and artisan producers.
Meanwhile, the Connemara Film Trail brings visitors behind the scenes of 11 iconic productions filmed across 17 locations in the region. From the windswept beaches featured in The Quiet Man to the dramatic landscapes of The Banshees of Inisherin, the trail celebrates Connemara’s cinematic legacy and Galway’s designation as a UNESCO City of Film. Ideal for off-season exploration, it offers trivia, celebrity insights, and behind-the-scenes stories, encouraging visitors to discover lesser-known locations while supporting local cafés, shops, and accommodation providers.
Connecting with Connemara's landscape, heritage and people
Speaking at the launch, Miriam Kennedy, Head of Wild Atlantic Way at Fáilte Ireland, said, “These new digital trails invite visitors to connect deeply with Connemara’s landscape, heritage, and people. Whether tracing the threads of wool through generations or stepping into iconic film scenes, these trails deliver unforgettable experiences that encourage visitors to explore further and stay longer.”
Terence O’Toole and Dominic O’Morain, Co-Chairs of CAITN, added, “These trails are vital for extending the tourism season, supporting rural livelihoods, and celebrating our creativity, hospitality, and global storytelling heritage.”
The trails are now live on www.connemara.ie and mark the first in a suite of themed experiences set to redefine tourism in the region.
