Born in Iran and based in Denmark, Abbasi’s fourth feature, The Apprentice, premiered at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival — his third Cannes selection—and was nominated for two Oscars, two Golden Globes, three BAFTAs, and three Independent Spirit Awards.

Abbasi’s second feature, Border, won the Un Certain Regard Award at Cannes in 2018. It received an Oscar nomination for Best Makeup and Hairstyling, and was nominated for six European Film Awards, winning the Best Visual Effects category. In television, he directed the final two episodes of HBO’s acclaimed The Last of Us, season one.

The Directors Masterclass will be facilitated by award-winning producer and Ace Producers consultant, Simon Perry. Fleadh audiences will also have the opportunity to attend a public screening of Abbasi’s Border on Saturday, July 12, where the director will take part in a Q&A.

The masterclass, supported by Screen Skills Ireland, costs €50 and will take place on Saturday, July 12, from 10am to 1pm in the Galmont Hotel, Galway.
