Leading Breton folk and traditional musicians Ampouailh,, will play Monroe’s Live on Friday, May 16, as part of the Galway-Lorient twinning 50th anniversary celebrations.
The Ampouailh quintet features Simon Lotout (bombardes ) Yuna Léon (violins ), Rémi Bouguennec (flute ), Heikki Bourgault (guitar ), and Gwylan Meneghin on bass. They will play with the famed singer, composer, and flautist Charlie Le Brun.
The concert marks an important moment for the band, launching their Iwerzhon Tour – ‘Iwerzhon’ being the Breton word for Ireland - and it marks their first performance on Irish soil. Ampouailh’s traditional music is deeply grounded in the culture and history of Brittany.
Singer, composer and flautist Charlie Le Brun makes his first return to Galway since 2023, performing Celtic songs and traditional Breton and Irish tunes.
From Rennes in eastern Brittany, Le Brun grew up in a family steeped in traditional music and is inspired by the likes of Alan Stivell, Yann Tiersen, Sinead O’Connor, and The Chieftains.
A recipient of numerous awards and nominations, Charlie sings in Breton, French, English, and as Gaeilge.
He draws on Celtic myth and legends in his song-writing, while also sharing his passion for Breton culture through performances of songs from the Breton region.
Tickets to this night of cross-cultural connections between two Celtic nations with Ampouailh and Charlie Le Brun, on Friday, May 16, cost €20 and are available from www.monroes.ie Doors 8pm.
