NUI Galway Law Society to celebrate 100th birthday

Law Soc to host socially distanced centenary celebrations from March 1 to 8

The Student Law Society of NUI Galway will mark the society’s 100th anniversary with a series of virtual events featuring some of the most respected legal minds in Ireland.

Webinar events will feature the Honourable Justice Frank Clarke, Chief Justice of Ireland, President of the Supreme Court; Dr Tom Courtney, author of The Law of Companies, and an NUIG alumnus. Other NUIG graduates speaking at the event will come from A&L Goodbody Solicitors and Frank Greaney, courts correspondent for Newstalk/Today FM.

Events open on Monday March 1 at 5pm with a webinar featuring Frank Clarke, Chief Justice of Ireland and President of the Supreme Court. On Tuesday 2, there will be a webinar with Dr Tom Courtney.

On Wednesday 3 at 5pm, solicitors from A&L Goodbody will host a meeting entitled, ‘Back to the Future: How an International Law Firm has evolved over 100 years', and is preparing for the next 100’. Journalist Frank Greaney will give a talk entitled ‘Media and the Law’ on Thursday 4 at 5pm.

The Roaring 20s, at a distance – The Virtual Law Soc Ball featuring cocktail making demonstrations, comedian and MC Tom O’Mahony (Damo & Ivor, Republic of Telly, Irish Pictorial Weekly ), and prize giveaways, is on Friday 5 from 7pm to 9pm. Tickets are €10 from the SocsBox website.

The centenary concludes with Women in Law: Celebrating International Women’s Day on Monday 8 at 5pm. The webinar will feature Michele O’Boyle, president of the Law Society of Ireland and an NUIG graduate; Maura McNally, chair of the Bar Council of Ireland; and Anne Marie McMahon, deputy commissioner of An Garda Síochána. It will be moderated by Ursula Connolly, of the School of Law, NUIG.

Adaptability and tenacity

“We hope the celebrations will allow us an opportunity to reflect on the last 100 years of the Law Society,” said Law Soc auditor Niamh Lynch. “It has grown to become one of the largest societies in NUIG and indeed one of the oldest in the country. We hope the celebration will show the adaptability, perseverance and tenacity of the Society in reaching this significant milestone – traits which we aspire to in the present times.”

Events are opened to the public but registration is essential and is on a first come first served via Eventbrite.
