Choice nominee Maija Sofia to play Róisín Dubh

Singer-songwriter, described as 'Jesus and Mary Chain meets Angel Olsen' plays homecoming gig

MAIJA SOFIA, the only Galway born artist to be nominated for RTÉ Choice Music Prize Irish Album, will play a 'homecoming' gig at Strange Brew in the Róisín Dubh on Thursday February 20.

Maija is in contention for the prestigious prize for her debut album Bath Time, released via Trapped Animal Records. Her music encompasses folk, post-punk, and experimental, and draw on themes of art, literature, folklore, the Irish female experience. The Sunday Times called it "quietly breathtaking [...] the arrival of a unique new voice".

The Thin Air has called her music "bewitching, almost voyeuristic" and compared her to Mazzy Star and CocoRosie. Hot Press described her as "Jesus and Mary Chain meets Angel Olsen". The Irish Times said, "There is a timeless quality to Sofia’s songwriting style that becomes more crucial with each listen." She has played Electric Picnic, Other Voices, and the Galway International Arts Festival, and supported Julien Baker, Joan as Policewoman, and Mick Flannery.

Doors are at 8pm. Tickets are available from www.roisindubh.net; OMG@Zhivago, Shop Street; and the Róisín Dubh. The Choice Music Prize will be announced on Thursday March 5.
