The Salthill Social — a great restaurant and more

Thu, Dec 21, 2017

Remember when The Spanish Arch was a car park and there was nothing much on Middle Street except the Augi; back when BT was Moons and Nora Barnacle's house was just another house; before Westside was called Westside and there was nothing Latin about the Latin Quarter — that was when Salthill was the undisputed centre of all nightlife in the west of Ireland. While those days are long gone, Salthill seems to be reinventing itself once more.

Biteclub takes casual dining to a new level

Thu, Dec 14, 2017

Abbeygate Street has, for a few years now, been the home of street food in Galway. While we may have lost several stalwarts in recent times — The Home Plate, Couch Potatas, and La Salsa — we have gained much more. This street has everything from authentic Mexican food to the very best falafel. There is a vegetarian cafe, an Italian restaurant, a chilli shack — and even a Asian supermarket and an American sweet shop.

One that has become a firm favourite is Biteclub, which has been a solid performer from its opening. Biteclub is restaurant and bar culture united in a unique way. This is a very happy marriage of two popular food trends, the new breed of pop-up style restaurants like Craicbird in Dublin or Canteen in Limerick meets food truck cuisine — resulting in elevated street food.

A taste of Italy with a Galway accent

Thu, Dec 14, 2017

Eglinton Street has many long serving restaurants to choose from, such as Maxwells and the Cellar Bar. Newer, more exotic, places such as Tomodachi Sushi Bar have lately increased the wealth of choice in the area. Zappi's, set in the sizable building that you may remember as Decobakes, is the newest of these dining options. Gone are the overpriced fondant icing and cupcake wrappers, in their place neat, red, banquette seating and blonde wood tables topped with terracotta pots of basil. This casual diner serves a wide range of traditional dishes, specialising in pizza, pasta, gelato, and classic Italian wines. Zappi's is a pleasant surprise and you get much more than you expect, many of the staff are Italian, further adding to the authentic vibe.

Time for tea at Christmas

Thu, Dec 07, 2017

It’s no secret that the Irish love their tea. The Irish drink more of this hot beverage per capita than any other country. The presence of tea making facilities is considered essential in any hotel room and is offered at breakfast, 'elevenses', lunch, dinner, and any time in between.

We have fully embraced that very English tradition of afternoon tea. Legend has it that the ritual of afternoon tea owes its origins to Anna, the 7th Duchess of Bedford. As a young women in the early 1800s, it was common to eat only two main meals a day, with breakfast scheduled in the morning and dinner taken late in the evening. When kerosene lamps were introduced in wealthier homes, eating a late dinner became increasingly fashionable, widening the long wait between meals.

Brasserie on the Corner, standing the test of time

Thu, Nov 23, 2017

It is hard to believe that Brasserie on the Corner has been around for as long as it has. It seems like only yesterday that the team were putting the finishing touches to it, yet that was way back in July 2012, and it has been going from strength to strength ever since. Opened on a disused corner of Eglinton Street, The Brasserie brought life back to this slightly down-at-heel area. It benefits by being run by the same people that have the popular Dáil Bar, The Front Door, and Tom Sheridan’s in Knocknacarra, a professional team that do not tend to miss a trick, and from being under the watchful eye of Eimear Killian, one of the best general managers in the business.

Considering it has enjoyed huge popularity from day one, the decor looks as good today as it did on the day it opened. The interior is beautifully finished with dark wood, leather backed chairs, attention to detail and quality in all finishes. Although a newly constructed bar it has some ornate features echoing classic pub design from different eras, which score highly with the tourists. Beyond the long bar counter with padded stools, the brick arches that divide the dining room look as if they have always been part of the building, the burnished ceiling casts a warm light, and the overall effect is traditional but stylish.
