Mayo GAA could be on the lookout for a new county secretary this morning. At an executive meeting last night it was expected that current county secretary, Kevin O’Toole, would have offered his resignation from the role to the executive. The Tourmakeady clubman who took over the position at the 2011 convention from Séan Feeney had previously served in a number of roles including PRO for the county board. O’Toole had been one of the driving factors behind the Cáirde Mhaigheo season ticket and supporters club which has been a big success since its inception last year.

St Anne’s Boxing club held a very successful tournament in the Peter Callaghan Centre last Saturday night, January 12, winning 10 of the 16 contests on the bill. The female bout between Ellen McDonagh (St Anne’s) and Rosie Conway (Geesala) was awarded the best contest of the evening and Liam McStravick (St Anne’s) received the award for the best boxer of the night.

In the men’s stableford competition last weekend, Matt Leonard was the winner with a score of 34pts. Oliver Moran finished in second place also on 34pts, thanks to Leonard’s play on the back nine, with PJ Brett finishing on 33pts in third place. In the ladies’ competition Breda Cleary was the winner on 36pts, with Margaret Walsh finishing in second place and Breege Moran finishing in third place.

Mayo will wrap up their whistle stop FBD League campaign on Sunday in Ballyhaunis when they face Roscommon in their third game in seven days. Following last Sunday’s defeat away to Leitrim, James Horan watched his side crush the challenge of a very poor GMIT side in Ballinrobe on Wednesday evening. There were some positives to take from the easy win according to the Ballintubber clubman. “There were a few good things, we were sluggish against Leitrim the last day and Leitrim punished us. I suppose we were a little bit better today and we’ll be a little bit better at training on Friday and next Sunday as we build up to the National League.”

The ladies competition was won by Carmel Henry on 32pts, Breege Jennings finished in second place and Nora Heraty was in third place. After four rounds in the Winter League, the duo of John O’Connor and Nora Gibbons are in the lead on 130pts. Jimmy Sheridan and Breege Moran are in second place, with Chris Mannion and Tim Evans currently in third.

he Knockmore Boxing club will stage the fifth Annual Vincy James Memorial tournament in the Foxford Sports and Leisure Centre on the Sunday afternoon of January 27. This is the club’s fifth anniversary and there are plans for a major event to mark the occasion. Sixteen contests will be on the main programme with 10 underage boxers prior to the main event, getting their chance to perform in front of the home crowd, some of them for the very first time. The Knockmore club is seeking sponsorship from businesses/clubs/organisations or individuals for the 16 contests and would be extremely grateful for any assistance in staging the tournament. Sponsors will have the opportunity to present the trophies to the boxers after each bout on the day. Past winners of the Vincy James cup are James Langan, the Mc Gowan brothers Dara and Tadhg and last year the 2012 National Champion Eric Nash.

The Claremorris Colts u11 team headed off on that road made famous by the Sawdoctors to the Sportgrounds on Saturday last with an equal measure of excitement and nerves. Excitement at the thought of meeting their heroes and nerves about playing in front of a packed crowd at half-time during the Connacht and Newport Gwent Dragons league game.
