The host club had seven boxers on the night’s bill and picked up five wins out of those contests, marking a very successful night for the club. The best bout of the night went to the meeting of Kieran Roody from Eagle and Eoin McDonnell from the Ardagh/Crossmolina club in a contest that saw Roody come out on top. The meeting of Patrick Lawrence (Eagle) and Anthony Leonard (Ardagh/Crossmolina) was another top encounter with the local again picking up the win. The clash of Damien Joyce (Ballinrobe) and Patrick Fallon (Monivea) was another tough three round bout with the Mayo boxer just getting the nod on the night to have his hand raised in victory.

The full results on the night saw James Collins (Eagle) defeat Mathew Murphy (Ballinrobe) in the boy one 39kg grade. The Kingdom come calling in league opener

Thu, Jan 31, 2013

They may not be the current kings of the game, but the thought of getting one over Kerry is something that supporters from every other county still relishes. On Sunday in Elverys McHale Park, Mayo will start their Allianz National Football League campaign looking to give those there in support of the green and red that very same satisfaction come full time, and set themselves up nicely to retain their division one status at the very least.

Having gone through the cobweb clearing exercise of the FBD League with a one of each record, beating GMIT, drawing with Roscommon and losing to Leitrim, the real business starts this Sunday for James Horan and his charges, when Eamon Fitzmaurice brings his side fresh from winning the McGrath Cup to Castlebar. One man who will need no introduction to the Mayo set up is Cian O’Neill, who will be back in McHale Park for the first time since he departed the Mayo backroom team after the All Ireland final defeat last year to take up a role as the trainer of the men from Kingdom under Fitzmaurice. In his one year with Mayo, the Kildare man was very highly regarded and that has continued into his newest role, with long serving Kerry defender Marc O’Sé singing his praises in an article in the Irish Examiner at the turn of this year.

Philips gets off to a winning start in charge of the Hurlers

Fri, Jan 25, 2013

The Mayo senior hurling team got off to a winning start last weekend in their first game under newly appointed manager, Christy Philips. Last Sunday afternoon in the Connacht Centre of Excellence in Bekan, Mayo faced Donegal in Philips’ first game in charge of the team. Despite having to play without a number of regular starters from the last few years Philips’ side managed to see off the challenge of their Ulster opponents by a single point on a scoreline of 3-7 to 1-12.

Big weekend of boxing in north Mayo with Geesala and Ardagh/Crossmolina tournaments

Fri, Jan 25, 2013

The High Chaparral was the venue for the Geesala tournament last Saturday night and a packed venue enjoyed some enthralling boxing. The best contest of the night was the female bout between National Champions Ciara Ginty (Geesala) and Saibh Green (Ballinacarrow). Ginty’s straight clean punching could not penetrate the strong defence of the visiting boxer and Green scored with strong body punches when in close contact. It was Green’s hand that was raised after the three rounds much to the disappointment of Ginty’s many supporters. Another absorbing contest was the final bout of the night between local boy Darren Timlin and John G Lawrence (Eagle club). Timlin picked off his opponent with good fast punches throughout the contest and got the decision he deserved at the final bell. Local boy Mikey Conroy’s first contest in the ring on his return from illness was against last season’s Connacht champion Cíaran Brogan (Knockmore) and Conroy boxed brilliantly to obtain a well deserved unanimous decision over a stronger opponent in the boy two 36kg grade. Conroy has a bright future between the ropes and is a boxer to watch out for in the coming years. Other winners on the night were Finian Carolan in the boy one 36kg, Oisin Lally in the boy two 39kg, James Doran

Charlestown look to make Croker decider

Fri, Jan 25, 2013

The Charlestown Sarsfield cavalcade will be making its way to Pearse Park, Longford, this Sunday where they will be dreaming of a place in this year’s All Ireland Intermediate Championship Club final. Standing in the Mayo and Connacht champions ways is Fr Rock’s, Cookstown from Tyrone. The Ulster men will be bringing with them on Sunday one of the most recognisable figures in recent GAA history, Eoin Mulligan. The bleach blonde full forward brings with him all the experience that being part of a three time All Ireland winning team comes with and will be the man, all of Charlestown will be looking to shut down. And the rest of his team-mates will also bring the experience of actually winning this competition in 2010, but were relegated to intermediate in Tyrone and have found themselves back in the intermediate grade. Charlestown are more used to senior competition having claimed the intermediate title at their first time of asking following their shock relegation in 2011. Sunday offers Charlestown a chance to make it into an All Ireland final for the first time, having come close in 2002 when they lost out in the senior last four to Nemo Rangers, while Fr Rock’s will be looking to make it back to the middle grades showpiece for the second time in three years.
