Repeat of last year's Moclair decider tops the bill

Fri, Apr 14, 2017

The meeting of Castlebar Mitchels and Knockmore in north Mayo on Saturday evening tops the billing in round two of the Mayo GAA Senior Football League this weekend. The sides met in last year's senior county final with the Mitchels running out winners that day against the north Mayo men.

A little bit of opposition research

Fri, Apr 14, 2017

With Mayo's place in division one secure for next season it was nice to sit back, relax, and enjoy the league finals played in glorious sunshine in Croke Park last weekend. I was on co-commentary for Radio One for the Kildare and Galway game on Sunday which felt like a friendly encounter for the first half, however it did liven up for the second period.

Early pace setters meet on Sunday

Fri, Apr 14, 2017

When the season was about to kick-off, you would have got pretty good odds on Straide and Foxford United leading the league table after the first few rounds of games, but that is exactly where they are right now, with seven points from their opening three games. You would have also probably got as long odds that the two sides who battled it out for the title last year would be in the bottom two, but once again that is what we have so far with Ballina Town propping up the table and Westport United just ahead of them.

Mayo dig it out when it really mattered

Sun, Apr 02, 2017

Mayo will be kicking their heels for the guts of two months now, until they get into championship action and you can only feel that’s a pity - because the intensity and passion they showed in the second half of this win over Donegal is something they will need to recreate come summer time.

Ballinrobe Community School hold their nerve to bring Paddy home

Sat, Apr 01, 2017

If there wasn’t enough pressure on Conor Heneghan when he lined up a free into the Davin Stand, as he started his run up the PA announcer decided to let everyone know there was going to be three minutes of injury time in the game. But the Hollymount-Carramore man held he nerve and drove the ball right between the posts to level up this All Ireland final at 1-11 each and send it into extra time.

Mayo need to make their point

Fri, Mar 31, 2017

Almost anything can happen this weekend in division one of the national football league, but there is one thing that Mayo need to see happen. Take at least a point from their game against Donegal and they can be assured of top flight football, simple as that. There are lots of other permutations and combinations that can see Mayo stay up, go down, or even end up in the league final as distant a possability that is.

All or nothing for Mayo on Sunday

Fri, Mar 31, 2017

What a difference a week makes. The Jekyll and Hyde side of Mayo football was never so evident as in their last three performances. Mayo put in a real gutsy performance against Tyrone in sun-drenched Healy Park Omagh last weekend to boost our chances of survival in the top flight. I wondered was it the same team that played Cavan the previous week. The football wasn't brilliant but this was all about the result. Mayo will probably still have to beat Donegal on Sunday to guarantee safety, as a confident Cavan will surely beat a demoralised Roscommon.

Ballinrobe looking to pass final exam in Croker

Fri, Mar 31, 2017

It's the thing that every schoolboy or schoolgirl who kicks a football dreams of and tomorrow afternoon, the boys from Ballinrobe Community School will take to the field in Croke Park and look to come home as heroes with All Ireland winners medals in their back pocket. It's been a few months of hard graft and sweat on the training fields and in pitches across the provience for Damien Egan's charges, but they are standing just sixty minutes away from realising their dreams.

No room for error for Mayo hurlers

Fri, Mar 31, 2017

Last weekend saw a phony war between the Mayo and Roscommon senior hurlers play out in Athleague, both sides knew they were going to be facing each other in the division 2B relegation play-off this weekend before a sliothar was stuck. However, Mayo did however record a much needed win against their near neighbours to send them into tomorrow evening's game with a pep in their step.
